JENN'S ACCUTANE JOURNAL

My History

Pills

DAY 1

Today I went to the derm and got my first prescription for Accutane, but so much else has happened I must start at the beginning.

I am a 21-year-old female who went through high school with very mild acne (getting a pimple every now and then) but as soon as college came around it progressively got worse. (In females a drastic increase like this is due to hormones)
So after trying natural methods to no avail I decided I had to go to the derm. Over many years I was put on practically every antibiotic and topical acne medication out there(including Triaz, Amoxicillin, Benzamycin, Minocyclin, Differen, Benzoyl Peroxide,Tetracycline, Proactive, Clearisil and many more I ca't even think of)My face was persistent however and I wasn't good at religiously taking a pill that I had no faith in.

What made me take this drastic leap to Accutane were the people who had actually taken it and loved it. I decided this was my only alternative...and here I am on my first day. In the weeks to come you and I both will see if this was the right choice.

Anyways, last week I went to a new derm and he saw my face and said, "Wow its pretty bad" yeah pretty harsh words. He then told me I had to go to the hospital to get lab work done in order to make sure my cholesterol and liver are ok (since Accutane could effect them)

So I'm off to the hospital to get blood taken and to have my urine sampled. That was last week - this week I went back to the derm so he could review my lab work and give me my prescription. I was put on 20mg in the morning and 40mg in the evenings (the dosage is determined by your weight and I weigh 150)

Not only did he give me the prescription but he also stuck a needle into my face! They are called cortizone shots and they hurt like hell but the point is to inject the cyst-like acne and smaller pimples with an anti-infection medicine in order to cure them fast and prevent scars. I hope I never have to go through that again however.

I also went out to the drug store and prepared for the side effects by buying lots of moisturizer (Cetaphil) and a couple tubes of Blistex because one of the major side-effects which most everyone has from Accutane is dry face and dry lips and sometimes even dry skin all over your body from what I understand.

So now I'm set and ready for the next 4 and a half months on this supposedly "wonder" drug and hope for the best.
