JENN'S ACCUTANE JOURNAL

WEEKS 18 and 19

Week of Jan 20 thru Feb 1, 2002

Hi everyone! I've put these two weeks together since I've been on vacation and couldn't post last weeks.

I went back to the Derm last week Tuesday ready to be taken off Accutane as he had told me in the beginning my treatment would only be for 4 and a half months. Well if you remember from last week I had broken out and was concerned about when there that was normal so far along in my treatment or not. My Derm said it might have been caused by stress and gave me 10 days worth of pills to see what happens in a week and a half when I go back.

Well let's just say it obviously wasn't just stress because I had about 4 more spots on my face. It's like the Accutane just stopped working or something. I know I'm being negative but it's hard to be optimistic when this far in my treatment (it's supposed to be over!) I'm breaking out. The red marks I worked so hard to get rid of have now been replaced with more redmarks from these little breakouts.

The pimples aren't cysts or even that big, actually they are very small but there nonetheless, and like I said before will eventually become red marks. AHHHHHHHHH I've been putting Tea Tree Oil on them.

Anyways the Derm told me I might have to extend my treatment which causes major obstacles for me considering my insurance runs out on Feb 1 and I can't apply to the Army with Accutane in my system. So I thought, well maybe it's only these two weeks and next week I'll get back to normal!

Nope!!!

Week 19 is here and yet three more of my little friends have appeared one on my lip, one on my cheek and one on my neck. Not to mention my face is cracking and flaking.

I always wondered why you northern people always complained about so much dryness when I rarely (if never) had to even apply moisturizer but now I know! I'm in Washington, DC and the cold weather is killing my face. I'm from Puerto Rico where its rarely under 80 degrees all year round! Anyways, my mom bought me some moisturizer because I didn't bring my Cetaphil (since I never had to use it much at home) Ok well she bought Clean & Clear Dual Action Moisturizer with Salicytic Acid Acne Medication, not knowing I really wasnt supposed to use it. Since that was all I had I used it wondering how it could possible work when moisturizing and salicylic acid seem to be complete contradicting opposites. Well, to no surprise it wasn't enough moisturizing so I've been using my mom's Vaseline Intensive Care Dry Skin Moisturizer with Vitamin A and E which has actually been working pretty well. I can't wait to get home and see my Cetaphil though.

I'm not giving up all hope though. If all else fails I know that my acne is "under control" and I can control it with a topical or antibiotic now. Options that I never had when I had cystic acne. Who knows maybe my face will go back to 100% clear soon. Either way, although I complain now in the end I know I have to give thanks to Accutane because my face is relatively clear and soooooo much better then when I started 4 and a half months ago. Even with a couple of spots at least now I can say I have a couple of pimples (Which are invisible with make up on) instead of knowing I have full blown acne.

Well that's about all for these two weeks. I hope all of you are doing well and don't be discouraged by my bad news -everyone is different!!
Jenn
